The Parrot Head Club of Maine sponsored a blood drive for the American Red Cross, on Oct 17th, at the Portland, Maine facility. The club had seven volunteers throughout the day. The volunteers staffed the front desk, giving instructions to the donors on the blood donation process and also manned the canteen after the donors had donated a pint of blood. Keeping with the Parrot Head spirit, virgin margarita's and cheeseburgers were made for the donors and staff as well as continuous Jimmy Buffett music throughout the day. This was a pleasant surprise and welcomed by the donors. In all twenty-four Cheeseburgers and approx three gallons of virgin margaritas were consumed.
Several PHC of Maine members volunteered to help collect "tolls" for Special Olympics of Maine in Old Orchard Beach. Two "toll booths" are set up on East and West Grand streets and we collect donations from passing cars. The shark not only attracts attention and has been known to nibble on hands and arms hanging out of windows. This is a fun event and it raises money for a very good cause!
Thanks to all who attended and generously donated! All the planning and hard work paid off! The convention was a big hit and everyone had a great time. As host club it was nice to see members from other clubs who hosted conventions have a chance to let loose and not have to work. Stay tuned for pictures and the final numbers for the amount raised! Benefits are the Maine Alzheimer's Association, Maine Cancer Foundation, Maine Make-a-Wish Foundation and the Maine Special Olympics.
